Shaw Warns Customers of Potential Data Leak 6 Months Later

Exploit: Data Breach, Insider Threat
Company: Shaw
Industry: Technology & Communications

Shaw customers were recently notified of a data breach that occurred 6 months ago. Despite notifying the police of a stolen company computer in June, the company waited 6 months before detailing the report to customers.

Although the letter states that the stolen documents did not include customer financial information or personal identifiers such as Date of Birth, and that there is no evidence of misuse of the information, Shaw will surely face scrutiny and reputational damages from the poor response time and data breach itself.

With minimal customer data lost, the documents still included Names, Account Numbers and Subscription Services. Shaw is encouraging customers that were potentially impacted to change their account numbers and to set up multi-factor authentication.

As human error attributes to an astounding 95% of data breaches, it is crucial for organizations to continue to encourage their customers and their employees to be cyber aware. Using strong passwords, multi-factor authentication and practicing safe web habits is a good way for organizations to start the process of proper data management, keeping sensitive information out of the hands of hackers and off the Dark Web.

If you or anyone else has been affected by this data breach, immediately change your password for this and any platform you use the same password for and follow the recommended steps provided by Shaw. Remember to continue to monitor your account(s) for suspicious activities.
