An intricate, two year phishing campaign with the intention of targeting 14 major Canadian banks’ customers, including many from TD Canada Trust, CIBC, Scotiabank and RBC, has recently been exposed. The extensive phishing scam targeted the banks’ customers with emails containing authentic looking PDF attachments, bank logos and authorization codes. Victims who clicked on what appeared to be legitimate links were taken to domains with visible similarities to the banks’ websites where they were deceived into providing their login credentials, etc.

Although the level of authentication and complexity can be sneakily high, as in this case, it is up to users to be vigilant and thorough when following links and providing passwords and other sensitive data. If scams are discovered, users should notify the companies involved and vice versa in order to help prevent more people from falling victim to the attack. Today, organizations must consider the ramifications of weak cyber awareness and understand that their data and their customer’s data is constantly at stake from those preying on the vulnerability of others. Phishing scams like this one play a large part in many Data Breaches and Dark Web solicitation for organizations and consumers alike.

If you or anyone else has fallen victim to one of these attacks, immediately change your password, notify your bank and continue to monitor your accounts. More helpful tips can be found in our previous posts.
