After waiting nearly one month, food delivery company, Door Dash, announced that they experienced a data breach that could affect nearly 5 million people. Hackers were able to gain access to DoorDash’s server where data on drivers and users was stored. In response, the company is suggesting all users to reset their passwords. Legal and reputational fallout is expected with the size and nature of the breach and response.

Personal data included the names, email addresses, delivery addresses, phone numbers, passwords and the last four digits of payment cards. The large amounts of data can be sold on the Dark Web for a large profit margin given the sheer volume of data that was taken. Further misuse of the data could result in individual cyber attacks such as targeted phishing attacks or even identity fraud. Users who joined after April 5, 2018 will be unaffected however DoorDash is still encouraging all users to reset passwords and to monitor their financial accounts.

As the direct costs associated with breaches continue to soar, businesses cannot neglect the fact that indirect costs are still one of the more impact and costly damages that occur after a breach. Simply having plans in place to deal with breaches after the fact, or even avoiding the thought of being targeted altogether is proving to be a disastrous risk for businesses in 2019. Taking the proper steps to assess vulnerabilities, safeguard data and train staff with best practices is proving to be a more successful way of avoiding the costs associated to data breaches.
